Who Will Write Our History? by Samuel Kassow

Samuel D. Kassow is the Charles H. Northam Professor of History at Trinity College. He has written six books, covering topics of Eastern European Jewry, the Holocaust, and Tsarist Russia.

Who Will Write Our History was published in 2007 and tells the story of Emanuel Ringelblum who established the hidden organization Oyneg Shabes (the Joy of Shabbat), in Nazi-occupied Warsaw where people could document all aspects of Jewish life and help compile an archive that would preserve this history. While the horrors of the Holocaust continued to unfold, the group kept working until spring of 1943. Only three members of Oyneg Shabes survived. Ringelblum and his family perished in March 1944. But before he died, he managed to hide thousands of documents in milk cans and tin boxes, two of which were found in 1946 and 1950.
